South Shore Medical Center Adds Upgraded Blood Testing Equipment

The new, compact Sysmex XN-530 analyzer is capable of testing up to 60 samples per hour.

South Shore Medical Center’s Laboratory, located at South Shore Medical Center Norwell, recently acquired a new blood testing analyzer called the Sysmex XN-530.

This equipment performs a commonly ordered test called a Complete Blood Count (CBC), which includes checking a patient’s platelet levels and if needed, a count of the different white blood cell types.

“The new analyzer is faster and more efficient, giving 22 different results from just a small amount of blood (about one sixth as much as the previous analyzer) in about three minutes”, explains Ambulatory Lab & Integration Manager James Rogers, Jr.

South Shore Medical Center’s onsite lab allows ordering providers to get results quickly for patients who need immediate follow-up.

Now, with the Sysmex XN-530 testing up to 60 samples per hour, the current testing can be easily handled and there is room for running any additional testing in the future.

To ensure accuracy, the analyzer has built-in checks and works closely with similar equipment at South Shore Hospital. This allows for a consistent comparison of test results if a patient is transferred to the hospital.

Special thank you to the Lab’s Technical Supervisor, Paula Morley, who led this successful project to verify the accuracy of the new analyzer, satisfy stringent regulatory requirements, train staff, and get the new analyzer up and running!
