Each month, South Shore Health gives the Colleague Spotlight Award to a colleague who demonstrates exemplary behaviors, actions, and/or work practices that reflect the values of South Shore Health.
We're proud to celebrate Rich Romano as our Colleague Spotlight Award recipient for February!
Rich is a plumber with the Engineering Services Team at South Shore Hospital.
On the Engineering Services Team, Rich is known as a talented plumber who is dedicated, dependable, and does whatever he can to help support his team.
However, a recent incident in the South Shore Hospital Dining Room served as a reminder of Rich's willingness to go above and beyond to help others.
In that incident, Rich performed the Heimlich maneuver on a diner who was choking, saving their life.
"We were just taking an afternoon break and my colleague that was sitting next to me heard her in distress," Rich said. "I asked Jay if he knew the Heimlich and he said 'no,' so I just kind of jumped on it."
After the incident, Rich returned to his work without fanfare.
"There's probably not too many plumbers out there who can say, 'hey, I replaced two sinks today and, by the way, I saved a life,'" said Henry Leitao, Manager of Engineering Services at South Shore Hospital.
