South Shore Hospital Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Receives Optum Center of Excellence Designation

South Shore Hospital Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery has received the Optum Center of Excellence Designation (COE). The recognition allows South Shore Hospital to perform bariatric surgery on United Healthcare patients and confirms the Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery is clinically superior to other bariatric programs.
South Shore Hospital Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery is offered in collaboration with Brigham and Women's Surgical Associates and includes state-of-the-art surgical treatment as well as a team of experts who provide lifetime nutritional and behavioral health support—a key component to long-term weight-loss success. The program is led by Neil Ghushe, MD, who is fellowship trained in bariatric surgery and an instructor of surgery at Harvard Medical School.

Evaluated annually to ensure the highest quality of care and best value, bariatric surgery Centers of Excellence must meet rigorous criteria for:
- Annual volume of surgeries
- Number and experience of surgeons
- Complications and mortality rate
- Certifications
- Length of program existence
- Multi-disciplinary team
On average, surgeries completed at a COE cost $3,487 less than those performed at other facilities. Optum COEs also have fewer complications and readmissions, 60% lower mortality compared to non-COE providers, 38% lower inpatient hospital readmission and a 43% lower reoperation rate for bariatric procedures.
In addition to the COE award, South Shore Hospital Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery is a designated a MBSAQIP Accredited Center-Comprehensive.
